Will Fiat Go Racing? They Should.

Will Fiat Go Racing? They Should.

If you were going to make use of one of the Fiat models as a car that could be developed for the race track, which one would it be?

The Fiat 124 Spider is certainly the one that comes to mind as the right choice to be developed as a vehicle that could take on others at the track and eventually become a true racer. This seems to be the thought process from Fiat as well with a new car being spotted performing some test laps that give us the idea that Fiat is getting serious.

The Car that Showed Up

Recently, a Fiat 124 Abarth GT based racecar was shown at the Monza Italy race track. This car was being put through the paces and gave way to the thought that the brand might make its way into the GT4 racing program in the next few years. This little two-seater car is one that could be perfect for the track and become a lot of fun to watch as it’s developed. So far, we don’t know too much about this car or what it will be, but it’s possible the Fiat team will give us more information soon.

Camouflage Didn’t Stop Us from Being Excited

The new race version of the Fiat 124 that showed up in Monza wore a camouflage wrap, but we can still see much of what the car is. You can tell it’s a 124 Abarth GT model under the skin that is fitted with an excellent aerodynamic kit for the drive. There’s a massive rear wing on the back, a ducktail rear lip spoiler, a huge rear diffuser, tall side skirts, fender vents, a NACA-ducted hood, a deep front splitter, and front canards. This car also shows up with a red tow hook, a roll cage, side-exit exhausts, and a relocated refueling cap that all fit well as a race car.

Not the First Race Car from Fiat

We tend to think of Fiat as the small and cute hatchbacks that we admire on the road. This brand has a rally car which appears to be the source of the engine that might be under the hood of the new GT race car. The Fiat 124 Abarth R-GT rally car is powered by a 1.8-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine that makes plenty of power for the ride. This engine is related to the one under the hood of the Alfa Romeo 4C. The engine should be able to make 300 horsepower and could be tuned up to 400 ponies once it’s under the hood of the new GT4 racer.

While we’re not clear what this new 124 Abarth GT race car will be for or when it will make a debut in a race, the fact that Fiat is working on this new car gives us the confidence that this team is ready to enter the racing fray in a new way.
