Tesla is looking at Reno for its Gigafactory site
Tesla Motors has broken ground outside of Reno, Nevada for what could potentially be the location of its $5 billion Gigafactory plant. The automaker, however, has not confirmed that Nevada will actually house the plant.
Tesla’s CEO, Elon Musk, disclosed the location in a letter to the company’s shareholders on Thursday that accompanied Tesla’s second-quarter results. Reno has long been rumored to have the best chance to become the site of Tesla’s Gigafactory. Musk, however, was careful to clarify that the site was potentially the final location, nothing had been set in stone.
Several states have been fighting to woo Tesla and become the home of its Gigafactory, which will be used to produce advanced battery packs to power Tesla’s upcoming Model 3 car. The factory is expected to bring thousands of jobs to the area where it is built.
“Consistent with our strategy to identify and break ground on multiple sites, we continue to evaluate other locations in Arizona, California, New Mexico and Texas. The final site for the first Gigafactory will be determined in the next few months, once we have full visibility and agreement on the relevant incentives and processes for enabling the Gigafactory to be fully operational to meet the timing for Model 3,” said Musk in a statement.
