According to Tim Mahoney, the Chief Marketing Officer at Chevrolet, one of this year’s most important launches for General Motors and Chevrolet isn’t actually a vehicle, it’s the launch of the automaker’s new, in-vehicle OnStar 4G LTE.
During an Adcraft Club of Detroit meeting in Detroit on Wednesday, Mahoney called it “a game changer” and continued, “You talk about finding new roads, you talk about ingenuity. We will be the first and only company with this across a wide variety of our product line.”
General Motors announced last week that the first vehicles with 4G LTE were arriving in dealerships across the United States and Canada. Chevrolet will be the first brand to offer the technology across a lineup of vehicles. Audi also launched one of its vehicles with 4G LTE earlier this year.
Mahoney claimed that 99% of customers were opting-in to the technology, according to early sales. The technology comes free for the first three months or for the first three gigabytes of data that is used.
The high-speed data network is built into the vehicle and is specifically designed for in-vehicles use. The network is integrated into the vehicle’s electrical system and comes with an external antenna that will help maximize connectivity and coverage for high-speed internet capabilities such as Wi-Fi hotspots.
Once the free trial period has expired, customers can start with a $5-a-month plan for OnStar subscribers or a $10-a-month plan for non-subscribers for 200 megabytes of data usage. The most data you can get is 5 gigabytes which will run you $50-a-month. Customers can also add the 4G LTE-equipped vehicle to an existing AT&T Mobile Share Plan.
