How Technology Is Transforming the Pickup Truck Market

How Technology Is Transforming the Pickup Truck Market - banner

Technology evolves quickly, but even late-model used trucks would look like something from a sci-fi novel to a buyer from the last century. We’ll look at some of the most recent trends in technology to explore how it’s transforming the pickup truck market.

Technology is changing everything about our world, including the cars and trucks we drive. Today’s pickup trucks feature high-tech towing, driver assistance, and infotainment systems, and now even some used trucks utilize electric-only powertrains.

To explore these trends, we’ll focus on the Chevrolet Silverado and how it compares to other top-performing pickups.

Driver Assistance Systems Are More Advanced in Every New Truck

Today’s advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) are becoming more advanced by the year. The Chevrolet Silverado 1500 is a great example. In 2022, it became the first Chevy vehicle to adopt the GM Super Cruise hands-free driving system.

Super Cruise is available only on the line-topping High Country trim of the Silverado 1500, offering an excellent incentive to drivers who can afford to spend some extra money on a premium pickup. The GMC Sierra 1500 Denali and Denali Ultimate also offer Super Cruise.

Ford now has a hands-free driving assistance system, as well. It’s called BlueCruise and offers some of the same features as GM Super Cruise.

Trailering Technology Is Changing How We Tow

Towing trailers can be a challenge. Thankfully, Chevrolet makes advanced trailering technologies available on most Silverado models. That technology includes up to 14 available camera views, Trailer Side Blind Zone Alerts, and a trailering app for easy setup and monitoring.

The Ford F-150 also offers advanced towing technology. Drivers can take advantage of available Pro Trailer Backup Assist, Hitch Assist, and Blind Spot Information System with trailer coverage.

The GMC Sierra 1500 offers a trailering package similar to the one found in the Chevy Silverado 1500.

Truck Infotainment Systems Just Keep Getting Better

Today’s top trucks aren’t just workhorses. They also feature advanced infotainment systems. In the Chevrolet Silverado 1500, users can enjoy an available 13.4-inch infotainment touchscreen and 12.3-inch driver information center.

The Silverado and the GMC Sierra both offer Google built-in compatibility on select models. This technology allows users to use Google Assistant for navigation control, temperature adjustments, setting reminders, and even calling or texting friends from the road.

The Ford F-150 runs the automaker’s proprietary Sync 4 software on a standard 12.0-inch display. The software system has an optional navigation system that offers traffic information and over-the-air updates for future releases.

What About Used Trucks?

The information above refers to the most recent models of the Chevrolet Silverado 1500, GMC Sierra 1500, and Ford F-150. While technology is changing fast, buyers who intend to purchase used trucks don’t need to despair.

Many of the standard tech features on this year’s models were either standard or optional in previous years. When shopping for used trucks, pay attention to tech packages. They vary greatly depending on the model year and specific vehicle.
