Before you visit an ATV dealer to buy a new ATV or two, it’s important to know how you can haul it around after you buy it. You could get a trailer, but you might also be able to haul your ATV in your truck bed, depending on the truck you have and the size of the ATV.
Let’s take a look at some trucks that can fit an ATV in the bed.
Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra
Most long bed and regular bed trucks can haul any type of ATV, but a short bed will typically only hold an ATV that is 400cc and below. The Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra regular bed or long bed trucks offer plenty of room to haul an ATV or UTV. If you want to haul a small UTV or an ATV with the tailgate close, the long-bed option is slightly over 98 inches. If you drop the tailgate and use a bed extender, you can get up to 120 inches.
The regular bed size of these trucks is just under 80 inches, which generally means you’ll need a bed extender with the tailgate down. This gives you a bed length of nearly 102 inches, which is plenty for most ATVs and some UTVs.
Ford F-150
The regular bed option of the Ford F-150 is almost exactly the same as the Silverado, coming in at 79 inches. In most cases, you’ll need a bed extender to get a full 100 inches for hauling an ATV or UTV. The Ford F-150’s long bed checks in at around 98 inches, which will allow you to haul most ATVs with the tailgate closed. If you get an extender with this bed, you can claim up to 119 inches of length, which can accommodate a decent list of UTVs.
Toyota Tundra
The Toyota Tundra has a regular bed length of 78 inches with the tailgate up. However, the tailgate is rather short, so it can only extend the bed to 98.5 inches with an extender. You can also get a Tundra with a long bed, which gives you a 97-inch cargo area. If you use a bed extender with the tailgate down, you can increase this to a bit over 117 inches. This is still plenty to haul most ATVs and some UTVs.
Nissan Titan and Titan XD
You might be a bit more limited in what you can consider at an ATV dealer with the Nissan Titan. Both the Titan and Titan XD only have a regular bed option. The standard bed measures 79 inches and can be extended to 100 inches with a bed extender. This is usually the bare minimum for hauling a UTV.
Ram 1500
The Ram is similar to the Titan in that it doesn’t have a long bed option. The bed for the 1500 measures roughly 76 inches in length. You can get up to 98 inches if you use a bed extender. This is shorter than any other half-ton truck and nearly two feet shorter than the bed in a Ram 2500 with the tailgate down.
If you’re looking for an ATV or UTV at your ATV dealer, the Chevy Silverado and GMC Sierra will give you the most room, but the Ford F-150 comes in a close second.
