The 2023 Lexus NX is only the second year of this new second-generation model. Typically, that means no changes, which is the case, but should there be some?
The NX has been in the market since 2014, and the first generation lasted eight years before being redesigned and made into a new model. While we admire the commitment to the style and size, this new version doesn’t make us feel like it’s a real step forward for the brand. That said, there are a few upgrades and positives to mention.
Lexus finally go the tech right
The most notable change to the new NX is the touchscreen infotainment system. The first generation model uses a wonky rotary control pad that makes most drivers a little frustrated with this SUV. Now, we see an attractive center touchscreen situated where it belongs. The standard model is a 9.8-inch unit with the optional 14-inch version for higher trims. You’ll still find dedicated physical climate control features to offer the desired control features. This improvement gives you the connectivity desired and allows you the touchscreen controls you wanted in the first generation of this luxury SUV.
The head-up display should be next
Does the Lexus NX have a head-up display? Yes, it certainly does. Is this feature easy to use? No, not even a little bit. The 10-inch head-up display is controlled by unmarked buttons on the steering wheel. Unless you built this vehicle or took a class on how to use this feature, you’ll need to consult the owner’s manual to find out what each button does and how to control the functions on the head-up display. This is an extremely frustrating piece of technology.
You’ll find a small cabin in this Lexus SUV
The NX is a compact luxury SUV, but it’s not supposed to be a subcompact model. That distinction is expected to be reserved for the smaller Lexus UX. Still, the interior dimensions of the 2023 NX are similar to the BMW X1, Audi Q3, and Mercedes-Benz GLA. That said, the new generation of the NX has an additional five cubic feet of cargo volume compared to the previous generation version of this SUV. Lexus does make use of every bit of space in the rear with a large under-floor storage bin that is large enough for a duffle bag or some groceries.
Powertrains; The crowning achievement of the new NX
The new 2024 Lexus NX includes four different powertrains, which makes it easy for you to find one that meets your needs. While none of these powertrains will excite you or create a high-performance drive, they all offer something to make them useful. Add a trailering package to any NX, and you can tow up to 2,000 pounds of cargo with you.
The NX 250 uses a 2.5-liter 4-cylinder engine mated to an 8-speed automatic transmission. This powertrain produces 203 horsepower and 184 lb-ft of torque. Choose the FWD model, and you’ll enjoy 26 city/33 hwy mpg while AWD versions of the NX 250 achieve 25 city/32 hwy mpg.
The NX 350 is powered by a new 2.4-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder engine that produces 275 horsepower and 317 lb-ft of torque. This power level is more than what you’ll find in many competing luxury SUVs. The NX 350 returns 22 city/29 hwy mpg and includes standard AWD.
Move to the first of the hybrid versions of the Lexus NX, and you’ll find the NX 350h. This model produces 239 horsepower and uses a rear electric motor and 4-cylinder engine mated to an electronically controlled CVT. The fuel mileage hits the right hybrid notes at 41 city/37 hwy mpg.
Finally, the top model of the NX is the NX 450h+, which is a plug-in hybrid SUV. This Lexus offers 304 horsepower and can drive for up to 37 miles on electric power. The electric motor is smooth and consistent, making this an impressive hybrid Lexus to drive and enjoy.
Which NX powertrain should you choose?
Given the opportunity to advise on this subject, the hybrid powertrains in the Lexus NX are better than the gas-only models. The NX 250 uses the same powertrain as the Toyota RAV4, and it sounds and feels that way during a drive. The hybrid models are more efficient, smoother, and much more refined.
Now, if we can only get Lexus to do something about that head-up display.
