Is the Third Time the Charm for the Genesis X Convertible?

Three strikes and you’re out, the third time’s the charm; we have stories of three everywhere. The Genesis X Convertible is the third concept to wear this name.

Prior to the X Convertible’s debut at the Los Angeles Auto Show, the brand brought us two other models that wear the same name. The first was the Genesis X concept that arrived in 2021 to offer us a look at the assertive and crisp design language implemented by this brand. Next was the X Speedium Coupe, which shows up over the summer with a longer, more graceful roofline. Now, we see the X Convertible.

This New Concept is Absolutely Gorgeous

Almost all auto shows give us at least one car that we truly wish the company would put into production. This car delivers strong proportions and clean, defined lines that make it look absolutely stunning. The long wheelbase and short front overhangs make it easy to admire the aggressive stance of this incredible new concept car. You’ll see large wheels and distinctive lights that form a grille shape at the front of the car. At the rear, you’ll find a ducktail spoiler, and when the top is up, there are integrated transparent moonroofs to give you an open feeling during every drive.

Genesis Didn’t Change the Interior

The Genesis X Convertible is the third version of the concepts bearing this name. As such, Genesis didn’t feel compelled to change the interior design or build. That’s fine; this area of these concept cars is pretty amazing already. The digital dashboard and infotainment screens sit under an L-shaped glass that angles toward the driver. The cabin has surfaces covered in recyclable wool material, with the seats and steering wheel covered in leather. There’s a special color scheme in the cabin with Giwa Navy and Dancheong Orange, which resemble traditional Korean roof architecture.

Every Model is Electric, But We Know Nothing

The new X Convertible concept showed up at the Los Angeles Auto Show, and we know it’s an electric car, but that’s all we know. The brand did not see fit to let anyone in on the specs or powertrain information of this new concept car. That might be on purpose; this car isn’t likely to ever see the production line, but instead, it serves as an inspirational vehicle for future models to borrow from.

Are There Any Genesis Electric Vehicles?

The three Genesis X concept models aren’t the initial attempt at electrification by this brand. Currently, Genesis offers a pair of EVs, which are the G80 Electrified and the GV60 crossover. Both of these new electric models from Genesis have had slim releases in the United States, with sales offered in only a few states. The G80 Electrified was made from the gas-powered version, but the GV60 rides on an entirely new electrified platform which is called E-GMP. This new platform is being used for several models in the Hyundai lineup.

Will There Be Any New Gas-Powered Genesis Models?

Gas-powered vehicle development under the Hyundai and Genesis names will end in 2025. From that point forward, all models will be electrified, and the entire lineup will be only EVs starting in 2030. This means the new Genesis X Convertible might serve as an inspirational model for future EVs. We don’t expect to see this concept turned into a production vehicle, but it certainly could be, and that would be amazing. Without knowing anything about the powertrain of this new Genesis, we can look at what might make it from this convertible concept into the real world.

Light Strips, Are They the Future or Not?

Many of the cars we see on the road use LED light strips for the daytime running lights, but very few transition these light strips into the actual headlights. This concept vehicle has light strips at the front and the rear. The front light strips wrap from the sides to the front and cross the entire face of the car. There are two lines running this width, one that drops to the lower part of the front to give us a triangular shape with the upper line. The rear of this car has similar strips. The red lines wrap from the sides to the rear but end at the trunk area.

Genesis Gave This Car a Pronounced Rear End

The ducktail spoiler wouldn’t look like much more than a lip on the rear of the Genesis X Convertible without the shape of the rear end. Below this lip that rides up from the rear deck, the rear facia of this car is concave, allowing the sharpness of this spoiler to show up. This shape provides a more pronounced rear for this concept car. We could see this shape make it to future G70 or G80 models.

The Cockpit Separates You

As cool as the interior of this car looks, it’s a bit strange. One of the joys of driving a convertible, at least what we’re shown in old movies, is sitting side-by-side with your significant other while out on the road. Maybe the seatbelt laws don’t offer this romantic gesture any longer, but this car puts a complete barrier between you and your passenger. The control center is pretty cool, and for people that want to have their own space in the car, this is fine, but it still seems strange. Typically, you’re sharing your space with your passenger, not being walled off from them.

Could One of the Concepts End Up with a Gas Engine?

If Genesis were to build all three of these concepts, one of them would likely need to be powered by gasoline. Of course, that’s only if these cars are developed prior to 2025. After that, they could all be EVs, and we could enjoy driving the Genesis X Convertible with the top down and the air flowing through the cabin.

Unfortunately, this car won’t likely ever hit the production line, which means it could only serve as inspiration for future EV models.
