We Could be Seeing the Mazda CX-70’s Engine in the Upgraded Mazda CX-60
The future of Mazda vehicles in the United States could be predicted by looking at current models in the area and new models in production overseas We’ll look at these updates and when you can expect to see them at your local Mazda dealer.
Take the recently-released Mazda CX-60’s latest engine, for example. We may see a retuned version of that same engine in the Mazda CX-70 when it reaches U.S. Mazda dealers.
But what do we know about this new engine, the Mazda CX-60, and international model specs that haven’t yet reached the states?
The Engines of the Mazda CX-60
First announced in March 2022, the Mazda CX-60 was advertised as a hybrid with a 2.5-liter gas engine and electric motor combo that gave a combined 323 horsepower. A 3.3-liter six-cylinder diesel engine was announced later as an additional engine option that delivers 251 horsepower.
Now, there’s the third engine -an Australian version of the Mazda CX-60 will have a 3.3-liter gas engine with a horsepower closer to 280. If we’re lucky, these same options will reach the United States automobile market with the same or better capabilities.
However, information from overseas Mazda models has led us to believe that the CX-60 and CX-70 in America could have different -or at least souped-up -engines when it finally reaches stateside Mazda dealer showrooms.
International Differences
The first question for many is this: why is the horsepower so low for these engines? Some initial numbers from Mazda put some of their new engines at as much as 400 horsepower, but only one of the CX-60’s engines reaches 300.
One reason for this could be the international stage on which the models are being released. European emission restrictions and a focus on increasing fuel economy could have led manufacturers to willingly limit Mazda engines to meet current demands and laws.
In some countries, like Germany, Mazda dealers offer vehicles like the C63 -a sedan with a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine that produces an astonishing 470 horsepower. Could models like the CX-60 and CX-70 reach that level of power in the United States?
News About the New Mazda CX-60 and CX-70 Coming Soon
A Mazda Australia spokesperson spoke about this issue with CarExpert after the new engine announcement. They said the new 3.3-liter gas engine would be in the widebody version of the CX-60.
However, the engine would have different specifications, and the SUV would be branded as the CX-70 in the United States. This same souped-up engine version would also be available in the CX-90.
The question now is what those new specs will mean for the horsepower, fuel economy, and overall power of the CX-70. And then, when will we see the CX-60 and CX-70 at your local North American Mazda dealer?
All the information we have right now comes from the European market, but soon these Mazda cars will be on American soil, and we can take them for a test drive to find out!
