In 2021, Jeep celebrated its 80th anniversary, and the brand had a big announcement of its goal to have a fully electric Jeep model in every SUV category by 2025.
This most likely means that several current Jeep models will get electric versions by 2025. Jeep has created 4xe EV models of the Jeep Renegade, Jeep Compass, and Jeep Wrangler. The next 4xe debut is the Jeep Grand Cherokee.
Jeep 4xe Lineup
The Jeep Wrangler 4xe was the most recently introduced model in Jeep’s electric lineup. In 2020, the Wrangler 4xe joined the global Renegade and Compass models in providing a zero-emissions experience. The Wrangler is arguably Jeep’s flagship model, so a 4xe model provides an excellent way to draw in a whole new segment of EV shoppers. Electric torque-on-demand allows the Wrangler to deliver crisp on-road performance as well as the powerful off-road ability that has become the Wrangler’s trademark.
Jeep made sure to emphasize that the Wrangler 4xe is a Wrangler first and an EV second, which should please diehard Wrangler fans of any variety. The Wrangler 4xe is Trail Rated and features all of the off-road upgrades that are equipped on the gas Wrangler models.
Jeep plans to introduce 4xe options for each nameplate in the next few years.
2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee 4xe
In late 2021, Jeep unveiled the next nameplate to get the 4xe treatment with the Jeep Grand Cherokee. The 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee 4xe gets about 25 miles of fully electric driving before it switches to a turbocharged four-cylinder. Jeep spokespeople announced that the Jeep Grand Cherokee would be the global flagship model and lead the way for the Jeep brand into a more electric future.
The new Grand Cherokee 4xe combines a 400-volt battery pack, two electric motors, and the aforementioned turbocharged four-cylinder gas engine to deliver 375 horsepower and 470 pound-feet of torque. When fully charged and with a full tank of gas, the Jeep Grand Cherokee 4xe is expected to have over 440 miles of driving range. That means it will get about 57 MPG.
Which Should You Choose?
Globally, the Jeep brand has four 4xe models now with the Renegade, Compass, Wrangler, and Grand Cherokee. However, in the United States, the Wrangler and Grand Cherokee are your main options right now. If you’re looking for a family-friendly SUV with an emphasis on more luxury and premium materials, then the Jeep Grand Cherokee should be your pick. If you want an off-road machine, then there’s not much that can match the Wrangler in 4xe or gas form.
The Jeep brand is known for its SUVs, so it makes sense that the brand would lead the way in creating a truly versatile EV lineup to give SUV buyers a wide range of green choices.
