Buying an American car isn’t as straightforward as you might think. Many makes and models are owned by American companies but are assembled on foreign soil.
For example, Dodge builds some of its cars in Canada, and Buicks go through a lot of production in China. On the flip side, Honda, an Asian company, has a headquarters and production in Ohio and your Jeep dealer gets its inventory from Toledo, OH.
Instead of getting caught up in the minutia of exactly how and where a car is built, take a look at our top American cars for 2021. These are all vehicles that qualify as American-made under the American Automobile Labeling Act (AALA).
Jeep Cherokee
The Jeep Cherokee isn’t just the highest-selling SUV at your local Jeep dealer; it’s one of the most popular options around the world. The only other real competition is the Cherokee’s sister, the Jeep Wrangler.
Over 71% of the parts, including its engine and transmission, are from the U.S. The Cherokee’s final assembly takes place in Belvidere, IL.
Chevrolet Corvette
The Corvette may be one of the most recognizable sports cars on the road. It’s known for being one of the quickest cars around with a zero to 60 time of just 2.8 seconds. With a top speed of 184 mph, this is one sportster we’re proud to call American.
Over 72% of the parts, including the massive 495-hp V8 engine and transmission, are built in the U.S. These beasts are assembled in Bowling Green, Kentucky.
Ford Mustang
There have been over 10 million Ford Mustangs to come out of an American factory in the last seven decades. This popular ride has more of its components built in U.S. factories than any other vehicle out there. With a host of amazing engines and a look that can’t be beaten, the Mustang is about as American as apple pie.
Over 77% of its parts are made in the U.S. The 2.3-liter turbo engines come out of Cleveland, Ohio, while the 760-hp V8 that powers the GT500 comes from Michigan. The final assembly takes place in Flat Rock, MI.
Honda Pilot and Passport
It may sound weird calling these two SUVs American vehicles, but the reality is they are almost completely built on U.S. soil. The three-row Pilot and mid-size Passport are both primarily built in Alabama. While other foreign manufacturers also use American factories for certain elements, Honda ends up being more American.
Both the Pilot and Passport build over 70% of their components, including the engines and transmissions, in the U.S. Their final assembly takes place in Lincoln, Alabama. The Honda Ridgeline and Honda Odyssey share similar specs.
Honorable Mentions
There are several other vehicles worth mentioning when it comes to American cars. The Chrysler 300 and Mercedes-Benz GLE-class both grab 69% of their parts from the U.S. The Dodge Charger, on the other hand, keeps most of its entire production in North America, although the majority of the process happens in Canada and Mexico.
