But Mazda’s May 2021 sales figures are making it simpler to see the light at the end of the tunnel.

Mazda has reported that their sales were up over 65% from a year ago. Optimism runs high when 42,187 vehicles find new homes in a mere 30 days’ time.

These numbers provided Mazda proclaim the best sales of any month in their history. Their top-selling vehicles for this record-shattering month set their own sales records too.

Here’s a look at the big three that drove Mazda’s fantastic month:

• The CX-30, Mazda’s popular subcompact crossover SUV, stylized as a “CUV,” sold 7,950 units.
• The CX-5, Mazda’s compact crossover SUV, sold an astonishing 20,595 units.
• The CX-9, Mazda’s mid-size crossover SUV moved 4.409 units.

What this means for the Mazda6

The 2021 Mazda6 will be the last of its kind for the foreseeable future. At the very least, Mazda will not produce the mid-size sedan for 2022.

Rumors hint towards a possible 2023 return. Whispers of its return hint that an inline-six engine and rear-wheel-drive could be in the mix. But who knows if it will bear the signature “Mazda6” naming convention. After all, Mazda has never been shy when it comes to rebranding vehicles.

The Mazda six came into the fold when it replaced the long-time mid-size Mazda 626. Despite a strong start, the Mazda6’s sales have struggled in the US in recent years.

In fact, the strong sales of Mazda’s CX-5 might be the final nail in the coffin of the 6, as it could be a mid-size replacement.

Even though sales of the Mazda6 have been sluggish, it still has a loyal following. In fact, some say that the 2021 Mazda6 is the finest to date.
