Ford is Getting Rid of the New Car Smell

Ford has found a way to get rid of the new car smell, and it’s much easier than you think to remove the smell from your car.

Some of us love the smell of a new car while others find this smell objectionable at best. The largest automaker in the world, which is in China, is a place where this smell is widely considered to be objectionable. While we seem to enjoy this smell in America, there are actual health reasons to no have the new car smell in cars. 

The Ford Process

Ford hired 18 scientists in China to determine the cause of the new car smell. This group of scientists was dubbed the Golden Noses and their job was to find the right way to remove this smell from cars and not just mask it. The fact is, new car smell can cause headaches and dizziness for customers. For those that work in the automotive industry that is exposed to extreme amounts of this smell, it can even cause cancer. Because of this health concern, the Ford team not only figure out how to dispel the odor in China but filed a patent in the US.

What Causes New Car Smell?

The smell of a new car comes from the volatile organic compounds (VOCs) that are part of what we find when the materials are freshly made, assembled, and secured. Cars are built with a large amount of adhesive and materials and often are offered with this smell. In America, most of us tend to enjoy this smell and expect it, but not everyone feels that way. The preservatives used in materials such as leather, plastics, and fabrics, cause this smell and the smell can be harmful.

Getting Rid of the Smell

You might not think that we need a team of 18 scientists in China to figure out how to get rid of a smell in a car, but Ford needed to do this to offer a leg up over the competition in China. If you don’t want to have the new car smell, when you buy a new car, it’s actually fairly simple to get rid of the smell. The process involves baking the car, which is described in the patent filed by Ford. The simplicity of the process is absolutely astounding.

Baking the Ford

In order to heat up or bake a car, all you need to do is either park it in the sun with the windows open for a period of time or turn it one, run the heater, and open the windows to let out the VOCs. The heat of the car will get rid of the smell naturally and won’t be hazardous to your health. This is a permanent solution to this problem and it doesn’t take very long to accomplish. If you don’t want to have the new car smell, for health or preference reasons, go ahead and bake your vehicle for a bit and it should go away naturally.
