A New Small Crossover Could Be Coming to GM

GM has a history of using the same platform across brands to offer us different vehicles for its entire family. With the emergency of the Buick Encore GX and the new version of the Chevrolet Trailblazer, a subcompact crossover from the GMC brand could be next. It wouldn’t be hard to see the GMC brand offer us a crossover that sits below the Terrain, in fact, one has been discussed in the not so recent past.

The GM Green Light Might Shine

It seems we’re coming ever closer to having the green light illuminated for the production of a small crossover that will slot below the Terrain. This modular platform will make it easy to build, but the team at GM expects to create a new model for the GMC brand that will be different from what we see in the Encore GX and Trailblazer.

The Potential Name

The last time we heard anything about a subcompact crossover for the GMC brand was in 2019 but that conversation was dropped. The focus has been to create the AT4 trim level, for the brand, but since that’s done, GMC can now focus on what they’ve already shown us. If we take a name from the 2010 Detroit Auto Show, we might see the GMC Granite as the new subcompact SUV.

A Boxy Design for GMC

Many of the GMC models we see right now have a rugged and tough appearance which is partially the result of the boxy design offered. The GMC Granite could give us much of the same and be an SUV that can compete with the Kia Soul as a boxy vehicle in the subcompact crossover class. Even though this model never arrived after the 2010 show, doesn’t mean it can’t be created now.

Don’t Expect the Granite Right Away

If the GMC team does plan to make the GMC Granite, or whatever name they use, and they want to make it an SUV that’s a lot different from the others using the same platform, it won’t arrive for a few years. Vehicles take a little while to be developed and arrive on the market, which means we can’t expect this new GMC vehicle to show up for the next couple of years.

What New GMC Is Being Offered?

The next vehicle we will have from the GMC brand is the new Hummer EV. This new model is an electric pickup truck that will be fully unveiled later this year and will go on sale in the fall of 2021. This new high-tech truck will arrive with over 1,000 horsepower and a set of removable roof panels to give you the open-air feeling you want when you take it on the trails.GMC is a brand you should be talking about with new models that will arrive and just might be offered in the next few years. The Hummer EV is on the way and a subcompact crossover SUV could be part of the mix soon after.
