There’s no denying the fact that the Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat is one of the most affordable cars with the power it offers. This car is the one that gives you the most bang for your buck to ensure you can have some serious speed at a great price, but with the 717 horsepower offered, this is a car that’s expected to take down some of the most amazing racing machines on the market. With that in mind, a modified Hellcat was tagged to take on a McLaren 720S to see which could finish a drag race first.
How was the Challenger Modified
For the race that you see in the video below, the Challenger was modified with a Whipple 4.5-liter supercharger, Manley rods, Diamond pistons, a Fore triple pump system, and Thitek heads. This car also received a modified exhaust system and an aluminum driveshaft. The result of these upgrades is a car that’s much more powerful than even the Demon that was sold through the year to give you 1,150 horsepower and 977 lb.-ft. of torque at the wheels. The question is whether or not this would be enough to beat the McLaren.
The Boring Competitor
When you think of the McLaren 720S, you might not think of a car that’s boring at all, but the model that was used for the competition is completely stock. How could the McLaren team hope for their stock car to take on the modified Challenger and win? The McLaren 720S is powered by a 4.0-liter twin-turbocharged V8 engine that produces 710 horsepower and 568 lb.-ft. of torque. While this doesn’t spell an advantage for the McLaren team, the advantage comes in the form of the weight difference, with the McLaren showing up at over 1,200 pounds less than the Dodge.
A Rolling Start and Off They Go
The two cars were taken to the line and rolled to a start to take off and race on the track. The drivers have to manhandle their cars to keep them under control at all times and make it to the finish line of the race in one piece. The question for this race is whether the displacement and added grunt of the muscle car will be enough to outperform the exceptional racing features and dynamic power and style offered in the exotic racing machine.
Which One Wins
Just the idea of putting these two cars against each other is a bit of a win for the Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat. Unfortunately, the car that crossed the line first is the McLaren. Even with the added power under the hood, the Dodge was no match for the lighter, more aerodynamic, and racing built car of the McLaren 720S. Even so, the Hellcat is still the car that offers you the most power for the least amount of money spent, while the McLaren will cost you as much as several Hellcat models would to be an owner of this exciting exotic.
