A Chevrolet Corvette is the Pace Car Once Again
As it has many times before, the Chevrolet Corvette will take charge of corralling the field at the upcoming Indianapolis 500.
The most famous and talked about race in North America is the Indianapolis 500. this race has been around for many years with 101 of them run on Memorial Day to give us the fun and activity we want to witness at the track. For several of these races, American vehicles have been the pace cars used to show off a new model that we’re sure to love and admire and the next running of this race is no different. We’re going to see the Chevrolet Corvette ZR1 as the pace car for this race at the end of May.
This will mark the 15th time in the history of the racer that the Corvette has been used as the pace car and this tradition continues for the 102nd running of the race. In order to celebrate this mark as the fifteenth model to be used with this name, the 2019 Corvette ZR1 will join the other 14 that have been used to pace this race and be the car you’ll see out front during every caution lap and before the race begins as the car that will get things started for the fans in the stands.
The New Chevrolet Corvette ZR1 is Special
The Indianapolis 500 is dubbed the “Greatest Spectacle in Racing” and that’s enough to need a special car for the job. This version of the Corvette is certainly that and it will get to show off during the race. The pace car features similar items to the production model including the 6.2-liter supercharged V8 engine with 755 horsepower and 715lb.-ft. of torque. This version is also equipped with the ZTK Performance Package, Brembo carbon ceramic brakes, a unique graphic package made for the Indy 500, GM Design fully integrated safety strobe lights, and a performance data and video recorder.
The race itself will take place on May 27 and will be an exciting event as some of the fastest cars on the racing circuit make their way around the brickyard in an effort to be the one that will make it to the checkered flag and win the race. This is one of the signature events that takes place every year on Memorial Day with several who remember early races or listening to them on the radio before the invention of television as they watch and listen to see who will finish at the front.
The relationship between this race and Chevrolet has been a strong one that has spanned the last century. This Corvette is certainly the worthy choice to be the one that will wear the name Pace Car and make the laps under caution for the racers during the Memorial Day race. Watching this race, seeing the pace car, and having a backyard bar-b-cue on a day off as the last Monday in May has been an American tradition that’s been enjoyed for many years.
