The auto industry is one that never sleeps. In some ways it must have taken cues from New York City and is always changing and always improving in a lot of ways. Recently we began to see what will be the new Chevrolet Cruze hatchback that will be part of the 2017 model year and give us a gorgeous new car that will be the largest hatchback on the market from Chevrolet, making it easy for us to have a car with more space in the hatchback build to give us the ride we want to enjoy on the road.
Does this means Chevrolet is sitting back and saying “look at what we built” while resting on their laurels? Not at all, they are in fact already prepared to add even more to the Cruze hatchback for us to love and admire while also taking advantage of the market that has recently seen a change in the small car world. This is certainly the way that capitalism works as well as a competitive market to give you a car that slides in and takes over the market in a space where another has left the industry.
In the US market the vehicles that have left the market are those offending diesel models from Volkswagen which were admired for many years by several owners. These cars were taken off the market and Volkswagen is facing scandal charges along with the need to pay off owners of these models to either have the cars fixed or bought back from them. This mess that VW has left behind leaves the perfect hole for another automaker to come in and take over this segment and Chevrolet has the Cruze hatchback in mind to make that happen and gain some new customers.
For the 2018 model year, the plan is to have a new diesel powered Cruze hatchback that can offer the power, performance and fuel mileage that we want to enjoy in a diesel engine. Currently the Vauxhall Astra diesel is a successful seller that produces excellent fuel mileage numbers to be a car that we can admire. This car is nearly identical to the Cruze and brings the same 1.6-liter four-cylinder diesel engine as what’s used in the Equinox. This would give the Cruze hatchback 136 horsepower and 236 lb.-ft. of torque to enjoy on the road.
More importantly, with this diesel engine the expected mpg is around fifty to give us a great number to enjoy. Imagine a new small diesel car from a name we’ve trusted for over a century in Chevrolet. Certainly we can trust a diesel from one of our own companies and that’s what Chevrolet is counting on. This new diesel model should be on the market as a sedan in the first part of 2017 as an early release for the 2018 model year and in the hatchback by the middle of next year to give us a pair of compact cars with diesel engines that can replace the offending VWs that we no longer want.
