The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has announced two separate investigations into the alleged steering failures in certain Nissan Motors and Honda Motors vehicles, according to CNBC. United States safety regulators are currently investigating 374,000 Honda Accord sedans, as well as 17,000 Infiniti EX35 compact crossover vehicles.
“The driver alleged experiencing play in the steering while driving 40 miles per hour,” the investigation summary notes, as quoted by Left Lane News. “After slowing to a stop, the driver reported a complete loss of steering with the steering wheel rotating 360 degrees without turning the wheels.”
The investigation into Honda comes in response to 24 reports of drivers claiming to have experienced a complete loss of power steering or a significant increase in the effort required to turn the vehicle. Four of the cases have been reportedly linked to crashes, although each crash occurred at less than 30 miles per hour.
The investigation into Nissan is much smaller, with safety regulators investigating the Japanese automaker’s luxury division, Infiniti, following two complaints of the steering wheel shaft separating, and the vehicle losing the ability to steer. Both of the reports allege that the steering became loose when driving before completely failing once the vehicle came to a stop.
