Elon Musk teased his followers on Twitter yesterday with a cryptic message and graphic for an upcoming announcement from Tesla Motors, which is slated for October 9. He tweeted a photo showing an opening garage that reveals the front of Tesla emblazoned silver car, alongside a message saying: “About time to unveil the D and something else.”
It seems obvious that this is a teaser for a new vehicle announcement, although it’s still unclear what the “something else” could be. Mr. Musk has previously hinted that Tesla may produce smaller models of its upcoming $35,000 Model 3 electric sedan and Model X crossover SUV.
“The D stands for drop top,” said analyst Theo O’Neill of Ascendiant Capital Markets. “It’s a convertible.” He also noted that Newport Convertible Engineering, a Huntington Beach-based company, recently customized the first Tesla Model S convertible.
The hint of a new Tesla model roused excitement, Tesla’s stock shot up by 4.38% following the announcement, the internet seems to be more interested in Mr. Musk’s choice of phrasing, “unveil the D,” responding with the same cheekiness one usually reserves for that variety of innuendo.
Mr. Musk responded to the internet’s amusement over his phrasing with a light-hearted follow-up tweet: “I love the Internet. Comments had me literally ROFL. No, it wasn’t intentional. Glad I didn’t mention the other letter!”
