Chevrolet has unveiled its Toughnology Concept
The word “aluminum” has become a big buzzword in the world of pickup trucks these days, especially with the upcoming 2015 Ford F-150 dropping more than 700 pounds by switching to the lightweight metal. The question on people’s minds has been when, or even if, General Motors and Ram Trucks will make a similar shift.
However, Chevrolet is trying to show that there’s still plenty of room for good, old fashion steel in the world of pickup trucks with its Toughnology Concept. The name may sound kind of lame, but truck looks pretty good.
The Toughnology Concept is based on 2015 Silverado 1500 with a 5.3-liter V8 in LTZ trim and clearly takes aim at the people who have proclaiming the end of steel use in trucks. The cab is made up of about 67% ultra and high-strength steel. According to Chevrolet, the material isn’t just 30% lighter than conventional carbon steel, it’s also much stronger.
The American automaker even takes an obvious shot at Ford Motors in the concept’s announcement, saying that the use of high-strength steel “offers significant mass savings at a lower cost than aluminum, which helps keep down the overall vehicle cost.”
