Gesture controls will be included in the 2018 Mercedes S-Class

The current-generation Mercedes-Benz S-Class has, without a doubt, set the standard for interior comfort and technology, boasting numerous features that more mainstream cars always try to mimic. However, the successor that Mercedes-Benz is working on, set to arrive sometime in 2018, is going to take things to a whole new level.

Jan Kaul, the chief interior designer at Mercedes, said that the brand intends to win back the reputation for “wow factor” that has been claimed by Audi and, more recently, Tesla. While the brand shows nothing but respect for the work of its rivals, which have set new standards for quality and technology, Kaul believes that Mercedes can do even better. “We only do things because that are right for us, not because our rivals do,” Kaul said.

One of the most interesting features that the 2018 S-Class will have is gesture controls. While voice activation and manual inputs will remain, the car will allow drivers to control some of its functions, such as radio and climate, with just a swipe of their hand.

“Yes, we are working on gesture controls for some functions, but of course, using hand signals is not right for everything”, Kaul explained miming hand gestures. “For example, if you are inputting a destination to the navigation, this is easier with voice recognition or a menu than gestures. But it is something we are continuing to work on, and you will see it soon”.
