Tesla Motors is turning into a big hit in China, and it’s all part of Elon Musk’s grand plan. The California-based automaker is well known for its electric battery-powered Model S car, and has delivered about 1000 of the cars to China in the three months since shipments started there.
Tesla also started shipping its first right-hand drive Model S cars in the United Kingdom last month. The combined markets of the United Kingdom and China have helped push the company’s second-quarter global vehicle deliveries close to the 7550 mark, which is much more than the company forecast and would be a new quarterly record. It would also mark a 45% jump in sales for Tesla’s second quarter last year.
A top-of-the-line battery pack and hefty government taxes on vehicle imports have helped drive the price of the Model S in China to a whopping $120,000. Even so, that hasn’t driven very many buyers away from the car.
