GM is planning a massive platform overhaul to reduce complexity

General Motors CEO Mary Barra has decided to drastically modify the American automaker’s platform in the hopes to make things simpler and save billions in the process. In a decision that could be the defining element of Mrs. Barra’s legacy at the company, General Motors will begin shrinking from 26 global vehicle production platforms to a mere 4 by the year 2025.

The announcement was made at a day-long investor briefing outside of Detroit on Wednesday. This move is intended to make the engineering and manufacturing process for future General Motors cars and trick much simpler, while simultaneously allowing the company to deliver better-differentiated designs more quickly to customers around the world.

It’s hoped that this move will allow the automaker to save billions on components, tooling, and other manufacturing-related expenses. However, the sheer enormity and complexity of this undertaking will undoubtedly be challenging, not to mention the fact that the up-front cost will be staggeringly massive.
