Tesla chooses Reno as the site of its “gigafactory”

Tesla Motors and the Nevada governor’s office are planning “a major economic development announcement” in Carson City, Nevada later today. This strongly suggests that the company has chosen Reno, Nevada as the site for its planned “gigafactory”.

“Out of respect for the process in the state, we are not giving out any more details on the announcement, but obviously, you can put one and one together,” Tesla spokesman Simon Sproule said on Wednesday.

The gigafactory is a large-scale manufacturing plant for lithium-ion batteries that is expected to cost up to $5 billion to build and will generate around 6,500 jobs for the area. California, Texas, Arizona, Nevada, and New Mexico have been fighting for months to win this massive economic development prize, and now it appears that Nevada has won.

Four months ago, numerous experts and people involved with the project said that San Antonio and Reno were the strongest contenders for the location of the gigafactory. According to reports, however, a second site is still being prepared in the event that Nevada is not able to deliver on the incentives that it has promised, meaning Texas might still have a shot.
