Ford is taking on the Prius with its own dedicated hybrid

According to numerous reports, Ford Motors is planning to produce a dedicated hybrid that is designed specifically to compete with the Toyota Prius sometime around 2018. This would be Ford’s first foray into dedicated hybrid cards, and not a hybrid that is derived from one of its gasoline models, such as the hybrid Fusion.

The new models, which has yet to be named, is being called the C240 internally, and will be built on Ford’s C2 global compact architecture. While there are scarcely any technical details at this time, it has been suggested that the hybrid will be considerably more efficient than Ford’s current gas-electric models due in large part to advances in battery technology and the use of more lightweight materials.

True to the automaker’s One Ford philosophy, the new hybrid will be sold in numerous global markets, including North America, Europe, and Asia. Ford is hoping to sell somewhere around 120,000 units of the car each year. However, Ford’s hybrid will be facing some stiff competition from the fourth-generation Toyota Prius and the second-generation Chevrolet Volt when it launches.
